As Blogger users are no doubt already aware, the default Blogger setup only allows comments to be made by other people with a Blogger account and by people who don't mind posting anonymously. While I have on occasion posted anonymously, I generally don't see the point. If I'm going to take the time to post a comment, I don't want it to be anonymous. Certainly there are those who don't mind commenting anonymously, but wouldn't you like to know who's posting and also open up your comments to the much larger viewing audience of non-Blogger users.
While I'm sure there are many ways to allow non-Bloggers to post in an easy and identifiably fashion, the way I see most often on Blogger blogs is through the use of HaloScan comments. From their website:
HaloScan.com provides a free, easy to use commenting and trackback system for weblogs and websites, allowing visitors to leave instant feedback. By copying and pasting just two lines of code into your site, you will enable your visitors to easily leave their feedback, opinion or a comment on the subject at hand.
So do all of us non-Blogger users a favor and check it, or something else that does the same thing, out.

Thanks for the heads up about Haloscan, Im registering for an account right now.
Great post! I could not agree more.
Thanks for using Haloscan. Blogger's comment mechanism is lame-brained, as it requires an extra step for you to see who the commenter is and whether they have their own blog(s). Why they don't support the same format as Movable Type, Haloscan, Expression Engine, WordPress, etc. is beyond me.
I have tried adding haloscan and I can't get it to work. I guess I'm too dumb
I wish I had never read this!
At first I thought you were right and that you'd hit on a good idea. Blogger's comment system is poor but Haloscan turned out to be crap and buggered up my blog so totally that I had to remove it.
Sorry, your idea is good but Haloscan is NOT the answer. So I guess I'll have to keep looking until google get round to updating the comment system on blogger.
Yes! Hooray! Away with Blogger comments!
When I had my blog on BlogSpot/Blogger, I used HaloScan, both for comments and trackbacks. I had to tweak it to work with other hacks I built into my template, but overall it was exceedingly easy to use. If you're screwing it up, there are plenty of help resources on HaloScan's forums that should set you straight.
Blogger's built-in comments are a naked attempt by Google (Blogger's owner) to inflate their registered-users database. Utterly useless. It actually discourages me from commenting on a BlogSpot post, even if the Anonymous option is available.
I went with Haloscan about a week ago for the very reason cited in the post - so non-Bloggers could identify themselves (if they choose to) when commenting. Also, I like the trackback feature.

I don't know what could have caused your problem but I've had no trouble with it.
A comment from someone on my blog prompted me to add Haloscan for the comments. I have to say I'm already liking it much, much better. It's much easier for me to reply to comments than the old Blogger interface.
I love the pumkin pictures...even without the smile.
What a cute baby! BTW, it's easier for blogger users just to go to their comment options and hit the option to allow anonymous comments instead of just allowing those with blogger accounts to post.
Yeah haloscan comments. Way easier.
Thanks for the tip. I added Haloscan to my blog and am very pleased with it so far.
I agree. Since I joined BlogExplosion, whenever I try to log in to Blogger to leave a comment it refuses to let me log in!! In desperation I have posted anonymously but I sign my name and leave my blog address just in case that person wishes to contact me. Halo Scan is much better!!!!!!
Yep, I am another of the converted. I picked up Haloscan yesterday (due to this blog ironically enough) to add to my Blogger blog. Initially I ended up banging my head on the keyboard a little until I got it just the way I wanted it.
Just a suggestion to fellow Blogger users - DONT use the Haloscan auto install - it totally screws up the template - and as they tell you in the preamble it *is* the Beta version so expect bugs.
Plus if you *do* decide to use the auto install feature it overwrites all the Blogger comments. So if anyone has commented on your blog *ever* wave buh-bye to those comments.
At the moment I have the best of both worlds. The Blogger comment box and the Haloscan. Fingers crossed it works fine so far!
Thanks for the Haloscan tip. I'll ask my 9 year old to help me with it in the morning!
Oh, the cheeks on Pumpkin boy!!
God bless America!!!
