The Nobel Peace Prize is a Complete Joke

Don't get me wrong, winning the Nobel Prize for Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature, or Economics is an incredible honor. But the Nobel Prize for Peace...is a complete joke.

089wangarimaathai.jpg2004: This year's recently announced recipient, Wangari Maathai of Kenya, was awarded the price, "for her contribution to sustainable development, democracy and peace." The Norwegian Nobel Committee should have stopped there but, instead, they continued on, "Maathai combines science, social commitment and active politics." Science? OK, here are some of Ms. Maathai's statements which show her understanding of science:

"Some say that AIDS came from the monkeys, and I doubt that because we have been living with monkeys (since) time immemorial, others say it was a curse from God, but I say it cannot be that."

"In fact it (the HIV virus) is created by a scientist for biological warfare."

"It is a tool to control (black people) designed by some evil-minded scientists."

Ms. Maarhai deserves the Nobel Ignorant-Paranoid-Delusional Award!

088shirinebadi.jpg2003: Last year the Nobel Peace Prize winner was Shirin Ebadi of Iran who is nothing more than a tool for the Ayatollah government advocating non-existent reforms meant to pacify the Iranians against complete rebellion. Worried that the U.S. will turn its attention to Iran next, this woman is Socialist Europe's poster girl because she opposes any sort of regime change in Iran.

When asked about the issue of Islam and modernization, Ms. Ebadi responded that Islam "needs to be better understood and to be interpreted more intelligently." Well, at least here we agree. I am way too stupid to understand radical Islamofacists' need to blow up people and cut heads off. But, accordingly to Ms. Ebadi, if I could just interpret Islam more intelligently, I would understand why the middle-east practitioners of Islam won't come out of the ninth century and learn to live peaceably in the world community. Consistently, in her acceptance speech Ms. Ebadi took the opportunity to launch into an anti-West, anti-American, anti-Israeli screed.

2002: Two years ago, President Jimmy Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Gunnar Berge, the Chairman of the Norwegian Nobel Committee since 2000, expressly admitted that the award was meant as a slap in the face of President George W. Bush for initiating war in Iraq. When asked if the selection of the former president was a criticism of President Bush, Mr. Berge, replied: "With the position Carter has taken on this, it can and must also be seen as criticism of the line the current U.S. administration has taken on Iraq."

The list goes on but, of course, no criticism of the ridiculousness of the Nobel Peace Prize would be compete without mention of the 1994 award given to Yasser Arafat, leader of the PLO which sends suicide bombers into civilian areas for the express purpose of murdering and maiming as many innocent women and children as possible.

Just to sum things up...Nobel Prize = Good...Nobel Peace Prize = Joke.

  1. Wangari Maathai is not the only Black woman or Black person who thinks that AIDS was created in a lab as a means of population control in Africa. I for one agree with her. What is more interesting to me, is that despite her strong, brave willingness to go on record as saying that, she was still Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. There are a number of Pan-African groups that have been decrying AIDS as a genetically mutated disease introduced into Africa through contaminated vaccinations as a means of controlling the population of the continent. It was a major arguing point at the first World Confernece Against Racism held in Durban, South Africa a few years ago, a conference I might add, that the US representatives walked out of when confronted and being asked to be accountable for inconscionable foreign policies by dozens of human rights organisations from all over the world. It's fine to say Ms. Maathai is delusion, but I suggest to you that you need to familiarise yourself with Memorandum (NSSM) #200, written by Henry Kissinger in 1974. That memo specifically discusses the effect of Africa's population on US national security, and advocated depopulating developing states in Africa to protect US resources. A few years later, AIDS began to make itself felt across the world. I don't believe in coincidences. Lest you think I am criticising you, let me disabuse you of that idea. I believe though that the general ignorance of the American population regarding the activities and motivations of its government is often the country's worst enemy when criticising people who are working against injustice in the world. I can't say before you accuse Ms. Maathai of delusional statements, you ground yourself more in the arguement. You've already made your statements. However, I say all this to encourage you that if you disagree with the statement that's fine, but do it from a position of strength rather than ignorance.

  2. I find that frightening and appalling! That was a whole lot of information that I didn't know!

  3. How much does the Ignorant-Paranoid-Delusional Award pay?

Hmmm....while I hold no respect for the current day iteration of the Nobel Peace Prize and while you are correct about Gandhi never receiving it, I do disagree with your assertion that "tons of war time presidents and prime ministers are awarded the prize for peace."

Go here and see for yourself:

    http://nobelprize.org/peace/laureates/index.html

The Committee would much rather give the award to someone who would let millions of people suffer cruelly under an intolerable regime that technically was not at war with another nation, than to a person who took measures to stop such suffering and bring true peace to a nation or region.

  7. Hi Don,

Enjoy your blog globally. But I think this extract is a bit out of line: "I am way too stupid to understand radical Islamofacists' need to blow up people and cut heads off. But, accordingly to Ms. Ebadi, if I could just interpret Islam more intelligently, I would understand why the middle-east practitioners of Islam won't come out of the ninth century and learn to live peaceably in the world community."

Islamofascists do not equal all the Muslims in the Middle East, just as Rumsfeld does not equal Western democracy. Also, many of them, the Palestinians most notably, have no option to live peacefully. 9,000 families have lost their homes this year alone - and I somehow don't think all of those 9,000 were involved in terrorist activity.

Thousands of Muslims live in our town, which has suffered zero militancy or terrorism in 50 years.

Just thought I'd throw that in as a thought.

PS: They your pumpkins? You must live on pumpkin soup all year round!

Allow me to correct all of you on one issue. You all say that Wangari Maathai believes that AIDS was created in a lab. Well, she does NOT believe that and made it very clear in 2004.

As late as December 2004, there were 3 competing theories about the origin of HIV. When a pressman accussed her of saying that HIV was created, she explained that she was discussing the issue as one of the theories of where HIV came from. She did not say that HIV was engineered.

That said, it is easy to see why Africans do not easily buy the argument that HIV came from monkeys since they have existed with them for years. So, the key thing is to continue with research that will take us to the truth for the truth is out there and only responsible and persistent scientific invenstigation will continue to shed light on the origins of this destructive virus.

    Peterson,

"Allow me to correct all of you on one issue. You all say that Wangari Maathai believes that AIDS was created in a lab. Well, she does NOT believe that and made it very clear in 2004."

The quotes I gave are accurate. ABC News is one of many credible sources. At best, her defenders claim that is what she said but not what she meant. Her statements were strong and unqualified and, I believe, stand by themselves.

Admittedly, however, she has since stated she no longer believes HIV was created in a laboratory by Western scientists. Whether her current statements truly reflect her current beliefs or whether they are simply designed to deflect criticism, I'll leave to others to decide. I'd bet that if in stead of ridicule she had received praise for her statements and everyone had joined in and agreed with her, she still be spewing her ignorant hate instead of trying to back peddle.

"She did not say that HIV was engineered.

Yes, she did. Unless you are trying to play some symantec game between "engineered" and "created" which is the word she used: "In fact, it is created by a scientist for biological warfare." Maybe she no longer believes this, but she did when she was being considered for the Nobel prize and immediately after she receive it. And, when the Norwegian Nobel Committee said that, "Maathai combines science, social commitment and active politics," they showed what a joke the Nobel Peace Prize is.

"That said, it is easy to see why Africans do not easily buy the argument that HIV came from monkeys since they have existed with them for years.

Let me be clear in that I do not attribute such a level of ignorance to the entire population of Africa as do you. Ever heard of Bird Flu? It can't possibly come from birds since we've lived with them for so long. So, feel free to pick up any dead birds you see and give them a smooch for me.

"So, the key thing is to continue with research that will take us to the truth for the truth is out there and only responsible and persistent scientific invenstigation will continue to shed light on the origins of this destructive virus.

Here are are in complete agreement. Too bad Wangari Maathai didn't hold such an enlightened view prior to and at the time of her receiving the Nobel Peace Prize.
