Murder of Terri Schiavo

I just received the following:

Dear Pro-Life Friend,

I’m taking the unusual step of emailing the entire pro-life blogs mailing list because of a critical situation that has developed in the case of Terri Schiavo.

Today, the courts rejected the pleas of Terri’s parents to stop her husband, Michael, from withholding food and water from her. He has promised to begin starving her tomorrow at 1 pm.

Most of you are aware that Terri is not a "vegetable" or "brain-dead" as Michael and his lawyers claim, but responds to others and is aware of her surroundings. She laughs, smiles and, according to her nurses, has a small vocabulary.

Terri is not on life support and is healthy. She needs help eating and is fed through a tube (helping someone eat and drink who is impaired has never been considered artificial life support).

While Michael asserts he is carrying out Terri's wishes, he waited until after he received a large sum of money from a lawsuit against her doctors before making this claim. During the lawsuit, he alleged negligence and motivated a financial award with the potential cost of Terri’s rehabilitation.

However, Terri has been denied rehabilitation that experts testify could allow her to eat and talk. The courts in Florida have consistently blocked appeals to give Terri proper tests and therapy that would improve her life.

Terri may not have the capabilities she once had, but she is no less valuable and no less a person.

Here is what you can do to help Terri:

1. Pray for Terri and her family.
2. Blog - communicate the truth about what is going on and rally support for Terri and the Schindlers.
3. Visit BlogsforTerri for information and to join the team of blogs for Terri.
4. Deluge Gov. Jeb Bush with emails and phone calls. He has the power to intervene. Here is his contact information:

Governor Jeb Bush
850 / 488-4441
850 / 487-0801 (fax)

5. Support HB701(click here).
6. Important - Bypass the Mainstream Media - pledge support a paid advertisement in the St. Petersburg Tribune to inform its 450,000 paid subscribers about what is really happening to Terri.

Your participation in help is desperately needed.

Thank-you for standing-up for Life.

P.S. I’ve set-up a special aggregator that displays only posts about Terri Schiavo. You can see what our 200+ members are saying here.

Despite a week of not posting, after this...I'm speechless. Regardless of anyone's opinion about abortion, letting this woman be starved to death is indescribably sick and disgusting.

This is a travesty! Terri's husband is an outright killer. What he is doing to his wife is torture. What has happened to his soul? IF the roles were to be switched, would he want to same for himself? (I highly doubt it!!!!!) Whatever your faith, PRAY for Terri's strong recovery. I am taking this to my church on Sunday. Prayer does work miracles, everywhere! Strength to Terri and her family. Amen

  2. If you read my post, then you already know my feelings on this. Let me ask this question. Is it right to make this woman suffer more than she already has been for the past 13 years? I believe in Right To Life, but I also believe in the Right To Die. Why make her suffer so people can make a point?

Her "husband" isn't saying she is suffering. He says she is equivalent to a vegetable--a celery stalk if you will. If she were suffering that would indicate some level of brain function that he denies exists. The family says she has some level of brain function, which would allow for the potential that she is suffering. However, then you get into a whole other argument regarding euthanasia of conscious people who's level of consciousness is outweighed by their level of suffering-that is not so much what this case is about.

It is my understanding that Terri's was awarded funds in a lawsuit in which her "husband" himself argued would be used for rehabilitative therapy. He has prevented her from receiving that therapy, which I find very telling. If he is right and she is a celery stalk, the therapy would be wasted, there would be no improvement in her condition, and his argument that she is essentially already dead would be strengthened.

However, I believe Terri's husband is afraid of the exact opposite result--that the therapy might show some positive result, regardless of how small, that would prove she is not a celery stalk, and that maybe she ought to be allowed to live.

I don't think she is suffering. I don't see her suffering from any pain. And, I don't think she has enough brain function to realize the position that she is in. Do we as a society want to sanction killing people with minimal brain power? I don't think we do but, again, I don't think this is what this case is about. Do the therapy. Therapy on a celery stalk results in a celery stalk and if that is the result, maybe she should be starved to death. (Actually, the doctors/people who advocate this should have enough balls to kill her more humanely such as by lethal injection than by starving her. You wouldn't starve to death a pet animal, why would you starve to death a human being?) However, if the therapy results in some minimal improvement in her brain function or reactivity, then she obviously is not a celery stalk and deserves to live like anyone else--absent some real proof that she previously desired to not to live under such conditions and the word of her "husband" is insufficient proof.

Let's think about what suffering means.....
Michael claims he still loves Terri and that he wants, more than anything, to do what is best for her and attorney, Mr Felos, also claims that he too is committed to Terri's humanity. Yet both have blattantly refered to Terri as being no more than a "houseplant"...a"skull full of fluid"...a "vegetable" on national TV and to the world.
QUESTION...would they dare call a black person a"nigger"...a woman a "bitch" ...a Jew a 'kyke" on national TV ? Is this the way we express our "love" and respect for another person...."houseplant ?" What a degrading ,humiliating way to be represented in public.....! These comments are nothing less than a cystal clear demonstration of cruel psychological and emotional abuse ----on national TV, no less.
These comments are but the tip of the dehumanizing treatment Terri has suffered at the hands her "Guardian" and his attorney....who supposedly care so much about her. Her legal guardian has been unrelentless in his stripping her of her right to "life's basic liberties" and her right have any "happiness" and now is on a death march to rob her of her unalienable "right to life"......and that , I might add, was not court given, but G-d given. "Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness"......If ever we pondered what these words mean, just one look at Terri's present plight and the those word's true value rings so deep and resonant that even our bones hear it!
This is the year 2005. We no longer accept as common, the locking away of the disabled in back rooms with the drapes drawn. We no longer find "hiding" them from other people acceptable. We do not speak of them in hushed voices ....We no longer believe them incapable of education, training, socialization, and improvement. We have laws that support, provide and protect the rights of disabled persons to be active, included, respected members of our diverse society. We are no longer "embarrassed" by the limitations of the disabled, but find pride in the fruits of their empowerment and advancement.
And then there is Terri . If Michael and Mr Felos are right that Terri has to be hidden away in a Hospice with her "privacy" guarded because of her frail medical condition, then why has she been able to stay alive so well without any medical intervention for the past 12 years? Being that Michael forbid anymedical treatment.
Be so very careful what you cognitively process when you look at Terri. Remember that what you see is not the pathetic lack of results of 14 years of failed rehabilitative effort. Remember that the Terri you see is the result of 14 years of a pathetic lack of rehabilitatiive effort . Terri is the result of a LACK of REHAB. In the past 14 + years , Michael allowed her less than 12 months of consitent rehabilitative therapies. And she was making progress; so the medical records reveal. And just 4 months after the $ 1.5 million malpractice awards, Micahel rejected doctor's advice and removed Terri from all and any medical and therapuetic treatment.

Terri has suffered ..Oh G-d yes! ; but, not from the long term effects of her injuries. but rather from Michael's long term abuse (neglect is abuse). And now, he will stop at nothing short fo killing her ...and Judge Greer and the Fla courts have shouted "go ahead" as they order him to remove her nutrition.
Can ANY moral conscience allow this to happen ?

    G-d Help Terri....and G-g help us ...and
    G-d help America

Forcing an individual to say alive in a vegetative state against her expressed wishes and the wishes of her guardian is what is truely disgusting.

Forcing a woman to remain alive while her brain has deteriorated and been replaced with liquid is downright cruel.

I truly understand your position, but I disagree that forcing her to remain alive if her brain has been replaced by liquid is cruel. You can't be cruel to a piece of celery. However, if there is still some level of understanding left inside her head (which her husband won't allow any therapy to find out if it might be true) then killing her by slow painful starvation (which we don't even do to stray animals) is far worse then "disgusting" or "cruel."

So it would have been God's will if we had ripped out Christopher Reeve's ventilator tube or if we withhold food and water from a baby. Each would die without our assistance just as Terri Schiavo is being killed right now. But, I don't believe any of these instances are "God's will." Sorry, your logic is flawed.

I think that the court system and Michael Schiavo are heartless. They are unhuman. They show that they don't care about Terri Schiavo. Why does Michael Schiavo not just go on with his life. He has another women why does he not give the parents of Terri Schiavo the right to take care of her. I have looked things up on Michael Schiavo and he never seemed to want his wife to ever get any help. What is this mans problem?. I have read something on someone that had the same problem as Terri and she made it through it when people said she wouldn't. I see hope for Terri Schiavo. Michael Schiavo needs to grow up and become what is known to be a real man. He isn't a real man. He is a jerk. He thinks he rules everything yeah right. God will judge these people for what they are doing to a wonderful person like Terri Schiavo. I think Michael Schiavo hurt Terri from what I have read. Michael Schiavo I think but his wife in this condition and he doesn't want anyone to find out.

If a person isn't brain dead or comatose, by all means the individual should be allowed to live, if it's the family's wishes and no living will was signed by that loved one. And most certainly so, if there is even the slightest possibility of improvement for that person. It didn't appear to me that Terri was in any type of pain the times I saw her on television. She looks to me like someone with cerebral palsy or some other type of handicap. Will we as citizens of the United States starve and dehydrate everyone to death because they didn't leave a living will, can't state their wishes to us, and we have decided without exhausting all of the medical treatment possible that this person won't get any better?

Hear-say testimony shouldn't be the deciding factor in taking away the life of another. I've never known of hear-say evidence being admissible in court before. Anyone can claim that they were told by someone they wouldn't want to be kept alive. And if Terri could speak, I believe she would tell each of us to try everything possible to improve her living condition. It doesn't sound to me like Terri Schiavo was ever given a chance for her situation to improve in the first place, if she was denied medical treatment and therapy because of one individual's self-centered assumptions. Most people I know will do all they can medically and therapeutically to save and/or improve the lives of their loved ones before running to the courts seeking the death penalty for them.

It sounds to me that Terri could have possibly improved if there hadn't been anyone in the way of her receiving the medical treatment and therapy that was and is available for her. I guess Mr. Schiavo believes life will be easier for him with Terri being dead. Trust me, he will regret this decision if Terri's life is not spared. I don't believe the pain Mr. Schiavo has felt or claims to be feeling now in regard to Terri's condition will end after Terri's death if someone doesn't quickly end this atrocity. Mr. Schiavo's pain will only be beginning. I believe in divine justice as well as poetic justice.
