Oklahoma Minutemen Counter-Protest Rally

The Oklahoma Minutemen held a counter-protest rally today during lunch at 21st & Garnett in the midst of an Hispanic neighborhood and business district. The protesters, numbering about 200, lined the roadside holding signs while drivers passed and honked approvingly. I was able to stop by and took a bunch of photos of the event.

All of the counter-protesters we're as wholesome and reasonable as they come. (Which stands in stark contrast to the left-wing sickos in the San Francisco Bay Area documented by zombie.) The entire half-hour I was there walking up and down the line taking photos and talking to everyone, I didn't hear one racist comment or hateful rant. If there was a general theme of the protest, it was that the protesters simply want our laws to be obeyed...is that too much to ask for?

And, of course, I'm drawn to American flags like flies to honey.

After stopping by the noontime counter-protest rally, I ran over to the courthouse plaza where the main illegal immigration rally was going to take place later in the afternoon. Who holds a rally at 3:00 on a workday...unless you don't want anyone with a real job to attend? Everything was set up, but the place was deserted except for five people who had the same organizers t-shirts on...

...and one was showing her true colors. That ain't red, white and blue. If you come here legally and want to be an American...I will welcome you with open arms. If you break our laws and waive the flag of the country of your origin...you will never gain my support.

I just wanted to unload on the subject to clear my head, so here goes:

Semantics. The rallies today were not "immigration rallies." Judged solely by their content, they were "illegal immigration rallies" or "amnesty rallies" or even "protesting our right to break your laws rallies," far more accurate terms given the subject matter. The name games continue with the attempt to change "illegal aliens" to "undocumented workers." Not all the people coming over are workers, some are children and some are adults who don't work. However, all are aliens which makes such a term more accurate. Further, they are not "undocumented." They have plenty of documents...illegal, forged, fraudulent, fake, phony documents...but documents nonetheless. Accordingly, undocumented is not accurate. There simply is not a more accurate term than illegal aliens. If people don't like it, they should change their status...not the words to describe their status.

Immigrants are awesome...legal immigrants that is. I'll even go so far as to say that legal immigrants are often harder working and more patriotic Americans than those who have been here for generations and take the freedoms and liberties we have here for granted.

Hypocrisy. The government of Mexico demands that we maintain an open boarder while Mexico's boarder with Guatemala is closed and heavily guarded. Anyone caught crossing the Mexico-Guatemala boarder illegally is treated incredibly harsh and, if they survive, is deported back to Guatemala. Mexico, illegal immigrants and their advocates and milquetoast politicians, all want the boarder with Mexico to be unlike any boarder between two nations in the world.

Hypocrisy continued. Imagine if Americans went to another country...pick one...France, Germany, Japan, China even Mexico. And we went there without a passport, visa, or any other documents except maybe some falsified documents bought on the black market. Once there we waive the American flag, refuse to learn the language, demand that everything be printed in English, don't pay taxes, don't insure our vehicles, burden and bankrupt their schools and hospitals and disproportionately fill their jails. Isn't there a term for similar such behavior...the "Ugly American." I couldn't agree more.

Who the heck moves to another country and doesn't bust their butt to learn the language? What kind of mentality is this? I can't imagine moving to Germany, Japan, China, Mexico or anywhere, regardless of the reason, and not putting every effort into learning the language. The only exception that I can think of is if I had utter and total disdain for the country and either didn't plan to stay or was actively working towards its downfall. In either case...I should never be made a citizen of that country.

Today is also supposed to be a strike or boycott of sorts...a day without illegal immigrants, purposely designed to cause economic harm to America. Yeah, that will make me sympathetic to your cause. I know there were a few businesses here in Tulsa, mostly restaurants, that were closed down as a result. But any effect the strike/boycott had was completely biased. To give Americans a true look at the economic impact of illegal immigrants, they would not only have to boycott buying anything but also boycott our schools, our hospitals, our jails, our social services and, for a day, not send any of the billions of dollars illegal immigrants send back to families in Mexico each year, not to mention they'd have to buy one-day auto insurance policies. Now's there's a boycott I'd like to see!

Finally, we don't have to wonder what the effect of an amnesty program might be. We did it before in 1986 with the U.S. Immigration and Reform Act. The only effect of that Act was that 3 million illegal aliens became 12 million illegal aliens. If you want 20 million illegal aliens, which some people want, then give amnesty another try. Even the French have figured all this out. Dominique de Villepin, France's interior minister, was asked recently whether his country would stage another amnesty, as it did in 1981 and 1997. "It's out of the question," he said. "Each time, it creates a chain reaction and wave of new arrivals." What a sad day when our politicians aren't even as bright as the French.

We don't do that for a couple of reasons.
    A. We have all we need here.
    B. None of the above nations were at war with us and acquired land that formally belonged to us. 160 years is not really that long. Serbs and Albanians have been fighting over their land for five or six times that. And don't get me started on the Arabs and the Jews. They've been at each others throat for......forever. Anyone who thought this was decided back then are truely out of touch. Who is right? It doesn't matter, because everyone thinks they're right, and it won't end until someone....anyone...suffers enough to say, lets find a peaceful solution. This is not an immigration issue, it's a leftover from a war we fought a long time ago.

First, in response to: "We don't do that for a couple of reasons. A. We have all we need here."

Not having all you need in your own country is justification for two actions: (1) working to fix your own country, or (2) legally going to another country and becoming a loyal citizen of that country. It does not justify violating another country's laws, becoming a burden on that country while at the same time giving it the middle finger.

Second, in response to your paragraph "B": You are attempting to rationalize such behavior because of wars won and lost 160 or more years ago?!?! Wow, if that doesn't show the weakness of your argument. By that justification, nothing ever gets settled and everyone's actions on both sides are justified.

Like the American Indians, who long before the white man came and took their land were killing each other and taking land amongst themselves...the only solution would be to entirely wipe out one side as happened to the Illini Indians (killed off by other Indians) discussed elsewhere on this blog. If "it's a leftover from a war we fought a long time ago," then the United States would be entirely justified in bringing in the full force of the American Military to remedy the problem. Ridiculous.

It is an illegal immigration problem, and every rational solution demands control of the border. A border fence should be built from the Pacific to the Gulf of Mexico, legal immigration should be expanded to individuals who want to become Americans and a highly controlled, regulated and strictly enforced guest worker program should be expanded for those that do not want to become Americans.

These people are sucking this country dry. As far as a criminal element, over 60% of the FBI's most wanted are Hispanic. Instead of sending our troops abroad, our border should be adequately guarded. And our nations National Guard and Reserve units should be rotated to the border, for their annual two week training tour, instead of trips overseas. As long as there are laws on the books, making illegal immigration a crime, all local, state and federal law enforcement agencies are legally duty bound to enforce these laws, and can be held liable for not doing so. If this problem was turned around, the corrupt Mexican Government wouldn't hesitate to have their military open fire and kill Americans crossing their border.

I am sick and tired of seemingly 75 percent of americans sick of illegal immigration yet they continue to not only allow these stupid Hispanic celebrations, holidays etc. and basically cow down to the mexicans here in oklahoma that are here illegally.
in sept the governor of ok even hosted a mexican celebration on the very capitol grounds, and his guest artists were illegals from guymon. and surrounding communities. (all paid for by tax dollars)
the norman library will host a hispanic (mexican) celebration on 30 sept where they will too host a bunch of illegals, about 4000 rougnly paid for by again, my tax dollars.
This goes on every year, cinco de mayos etc. please that is NOT an american holiday nor should my tax dollars go to support the illegals. Shouldnt we protest or something?? why are they getting a free ride while us americans have to foot the bill and pay the taxes and we are shoved into a corner and told we have to 'respect' this...NO we dont. this is OUR country and yes i am all for LEGAL immigration, we welcome LEGAL mexicans but illegals, OUT!!!!! empty the chicken plants and the pig farms whatever it takes, these jobs belong to americans...
where is our immigration police??/ dont tell me they dont KNOW that is going on..sure they do...

All this anger and hatred towards the Mexicans could be solved with one word; “LOVE”, they’re people just like you and me that are trying to provide better lives for their family.

"If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well"
    James 2:8

I've found no "anger and hatred towards the Mexicans" as you put it. There is, however, a lot of anger towards to people of any nationality that come here illegally and break our laws from immigration laws, to tax laws, to driving without license, and many others. Then, when some of those illegal alien lawbreakers show an attitude of disgust towards those who's nation they've broken into, it naturally provokes a response of anger even hatred in law abiding American citizens.

But, that anger is not towards Mexican in general...I've never met a person who was truly angry and/or hated all Mexicans. The anger is toward illegal aliens and persons in this country and foreign countries who flout our laws and encourage people to break them. But, make no mistake, any such anger is not directed at all Mexicans. In fact, many of the Mexicans I know who have come here legally are better, more patriotic Americans, than some who have been here for generations and take our freedoms and opportunities for granted and who are constantly looking to the government for a handout.

The pro-illegal alien groups have no rational argument to support their cause and must, therefore, demonize those in this nation that only want law and order. We are not racists, bigots nor suffer from any kind of fill-in-the-blank-ism. I and others such as the Minutemen, are strongly in favor of increased legal immigration and organized and controlled temporary worker programs, etc. These beliefs totally refute the notion that pro-legal-immigration people like myself are somehow full of anger and hatred and lacking love as you claim. Who is it that first evidences the lack of love towards others? How about the one who breaks the laws of another nation?

No, unfortunately, love will not solve everything. Loving the world's populous while allowing it to flood our shores and decimate our economy, our country and our way of life is not the answer. And, while it is true that the majority are just "trying to provide better lives for their family," that does not justify breaking the law. If it does, I'm on my way to your bank to make an unauthorized withdrawal and your home to take up residence...after all, I'm just trying to provide a better life for me and my family.

In this day and age it is suicidal for a nation to simply allow anyone and everyone to cross its boarder anonymously. No other country does it, why is America being asked to do it?

  14. First off, I cannot agree more with you Don. I have been at most, if not all, of the Tulsa minuteman rallies. We are always peaceful and never promote hate or racism. We simply want people to abide by the laws as we do.

Unfortunatly on the Cinco De Mayo rally, the minuteman were the target of hate. The pro-amnesty side began throwing eggs and bottles at us towards the end of the rally. We turned them into police (who refused to arrest them for inciting a riot as they had threatened to do to us.) and then we packed up and left. Minuteman are peaceful and do not wish to fight, we simply want our point out for people to see.

I do not protest mexicans having cinco de mayo, because I believe it okay to celebrate holidays of your origion. Hell look at Oktoberfest and things of that nature. Okay fine, just do it if your LEGAL. Don't do it to force us to celebrate YOUR holidays.

Also, just a note to spurwing plover...
    Halloween (Pagan new year), Christmas/Yule (Winter Solstic), Easter (Spring Solstice), etc are all originally pagan holidays. They were changed when Christ was born to be centered around him. The meanings have changed yes, but the original holidays were pagan. :}

The irony behind the philosophy of "minutemen" in Oklahoma is the fact that they are descendants of the FIRST wave of illegals; the white land runners who, basically, took over Indian Territory(before it was Oklahoma of course) and staked claim to lands, illegally. You people want to protest and get riled up at "illegal" Mexicans, but you are in actuality immigrants yourself. If you don't like the brown people of this hemisphere, then return to EUROPE where you will feel much more comfortable! And you want to tell people to learn to speak English? Why don't you learn to speak Osage or Muscogee Creek before you tell others to learn English? INDIGENOUS STRUGGLE! NATIVE PRIDE! OKKKLAHOMA WAS ORIGINALLY INDIAN TERRITORY!

So many fallacies in your arguments, I don't know where to begin. There are few, if any, places in the world currently occupied by the same people/tribe/culture as the first people to occupy the land. Should everyone the world over play musical chairs and relocate based on their DNA and who occupied the land first tens of thousands of years ago? What an absurd proposition.

Your comments also ignore the fact that no one can point to a specific part of the United States and say that a specific Indian Tribe always occupied that location. Indian Tribes were migratory and waged war against one another. Was it not illegal when Indians wiped out the Illini tribe? (Covered elsewhere in my blog.) And, when innumerous other tribes through the ages fought, murdered, tortured, raped, stole and committed every other possible atrocities man commits against man against other tribes? Or, do you subscribe to the white-washed, politically correct, version that all Indians were peace loving people, at one with the land, using every part of the buffalo? There's nothing mystical about American Indians, they have as much blood...Indian blood...on their hands as any people or culture.

And what if the White Man had never come to America...would the American Indians have gone on to defeat Hitler and Tojo and be the primary cause of the collapse of the Soviet Union. Without European migration, Mexicans and American Indians certainly would not have to worry about speaking English, but they would be a lot more familiar with German, Japanese and Russian. Raise your hand if you think you'd be better off under rule of the Nazis, Imperialists or Communists!

And then we get to the tired old allegation on which your ignorance is based, "you don't like brown people." That is so 1960s. Get up to date, the only people who give a rat's butt about skin color are liberals and special interest groups who want special, not equal, treatment. I, and every Minuteman I have met, couldn't care less about skin color.

Lastly, as to why people should speak English, because that's what my ancestors did when they came to America. They learned English, changed names to fit their new country (e.g., Wilhelm to William) and my Great-Grandfather sent at least three of his sons to fight the Kaiser...the very same country he had immigrated from. I expect nothing less from those that want to come to the United States and benefit from the greatest country on the planet. Mexicans are just as smart and hardworking as any other nationality. There is absolutely no reason they can't learn the language.

411 operator, how may I help you?

You could try the link in my post to the Minuteman Project website where you can click on the "Contact Us" tab which will provide you mailing address, several phone numbers and email addresses. Someone there should be able to assist you. However, while they list contact information for many state chapters, they currently do no have any contact information for Oklahoma.

    Thank you for using AT&T.
