Lead is very useful in paint as it speeds drying, increases durability, improves appearance and resists moisture. In fact, it's still commonly used in industry and by the military. But, as everyone knows lead is extremely toxic and is especially dangerous to small children in which it causes nervous system damage, hearing loss, reduced IQ, kidney damage and other developmental problems.
So, guess where the lead painted Thomas toys were manufactured. Any idea? Take a wild guess. I'll give you a hint, the country just recently exported poisoned pet food all over the world resulting in the death of thousands of pets and the recall of 5300 pet food products. Yep, China. Anybody else getting a little sick of that country?
[Update:] I noticed there are a number of reddish pieces in our set that are not included in the recall, but that there is a tree which is the exact same color as the pieces which are included in the recall. A little after 6 pm, I sent the following email to the manufacturer, RC2 Corporation:
I have the Deluxe Sights and Sounds set and will be exchanging a number of pieces from the set as part of the recall. I could not help but notice that at least one of the trees from the set appears to be the same shade of red as the other recalled pieces. Would you please confirm that the red tree should not be part of the recall.

Just after 8 am the next morning, I received this reply:
Dear Don Danz:
The red trees are not part of the recall.
Consumer Service
I imagine they are being deluged with inquiries so I'm pretty impressed with their response time to my question. The Danz Family will remain big Thomas fans!

Excellent posting Don!
Are these pieces wooden or is that the name of the collection? I have die cast ones. I hope they are different. Mine are made by Learning Curve In't inc.
I believe all the recalled pieces are wooden. If you have any questions, please check the recall site I linked too.
We have 5 of the recalled trains. Our sons (ages 3 and 1) are having blood tests done to screen for lead poisoning. Our 3-year old has developmental delays, including diagnosed speech apraxia, has been tested for autism, and receives speech therapy. Up until now, we had no explanation for his problems. I never would’ve thought his favorite toys could be the culprits! He has played with these toys for hours a week, including sleeping with them in his hands or at his face, for months, maybe even a year. The paint has worn off some portions of the trains, including from my boys putting the toys into their mouths. If the negligence of this terrible RC2 Corporation has caused my son’s developmental delays, and who knows how his future learning and life may suffer, I will spend every free minute making sure they pay for it and making sure other families with children with Thomas & Friends toxic lead poisoning find out the truth. Shame on RC2 for putting money-making ahead of the health and welfare of our country’s innocent little children!
My son has virtually every recalled thomas the tank engine toy that was sold. Our son has recently been diagnosed with ADD and a learning disability and we also have no other explaination as to why this happened? I thought that I was buying the best toys that money could buy due to the cost. I did notice that the paint chipped off many of the toys but I had no idea that it was toxic. When I heard of the recall I tried calling the company and ran into a stone wall that was set up by insurance company's workers. People whom answered the phone were uncaring and said you can a free toy WOW. As if that would make up for toxic exposure! Telephone calls were not returned and neither were letters or emails. I even got to the president voice mail and left a message no answer. Good luck to all the families effected by these toxic toys and may God heal the children
