A blue moon isn't really blue. Rather, it is the second full moon to occur in a single calendar month. Tonight, the last day of the year, there was a blue moon. A full moon occurs every 29.5 days. Blue moons occur on average about every 2.7 years which works out to about 3% of all full moons. The last time there was a blue moon on New Year's Eve was on December 31, 1990. The next blue moon will be on August 31, 2012, while the next New Year's Eve blue moon won't happen until December 31, 2028. Finally, the last time a decade ended on a full moon (if you believe the decade ended tonight) was on December 31, 1819.
Taken with Canon EOS Rebel T1i (500D), Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L IS USM Lens, 1/400 sec, F5.0, ISO 100, exposure bias 0/1, 200.00mm, no flash, auto exposure, spot metering.

I know I will have completed my 60th year on Feb 2, 2010 having been born on that date in 1950 at the age of Zero. From the 2nd of Feb 2010 to the 2nd of Feb 2011 I will be enjoying a buildup of my 61 year of living. People don't begin life at age One. However, in scientific reality, I believe we are approximately 9 months old at birth, but let's not muddy the topic at hand.
I have heard the back and forth drama over the first millennium moment and understand that the zero year wasn't counted for a very long time a very long time ago. So in terms of calendar time it may not be the same as in person years. The last discussion I listened to stated centuries and millenniums begin on the One because way back the Zero wasn't used but now that it is, decades do begin on the Zero. I like the uniformity of starting the decade/century/millennium/people at Zero.
You know what? Don't let this ruin your party. Celebrate twice.
