Today the five of us went to see the Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus, also known as the Greatest Show on Earth! There are several Ringling Bros. shows that tour the country at the same time and we got to see Zing Zang Zoom (the Red tour). (Close up family photo after the jump.)
There were plenty of well-trained elephants.
The tigers performed with amazing precision and cooperation.
The show featured two human cannonballs simultaneously shot from a double barrel cannon who flew about 65 feet across the arena landing on two parallel airbags. (Vimeo version after the jump.)
Even after a few Google searches I'm not sure if there is a special name for the acrobats that perform high in the air while holding on to, or wound up in, the long silk scarves.
The high wire act walked, danced, jumped rope and rode across the tight wire better than I can walk down the street. I can remember that I used to think that using a safety line took away from the show. Now that I'm older, it actually allows me to enjoy the performance more since I don't have to worry--as much--about the performer's safety.
Finally, a close up of one of the performing elephants. There were tons of other acts, illusions, clowns, performers and music. We all had a really great time. (Just try not to think about the $12 cotton candy.)

I am sickened that you think a family trip to the circus is something to smile about. Have you ever heard about the miserable lives these creatures have? Not allowed to live the life god meant for them? Ripped from their mothers at too young an age. Beaten into being those "well-trained" animals. FORCED to perform with "precision and cooperation. " That is no life for a wild animal and it is despicable that we humans force them into miserable, abismal lives for our entertainment. Just despicable. You should be ashamed of yourselves.
Jaymi, I'd love to hear more about your knowledge of what God (capital "G") intended for the lives of these animals. As for me and my family, God put animals on the earth for us to eat, wear, work, use and amuse ourselves with among many other things.
I'll join you in seeking to preserve these fine animals in the wild and for eliminating cruel treatment in captivity. But, you come off like a loon condemning all circuses for treatment and conditions that exist mostly in the past and elsewhere. It is perfectly appropriate for quality modern circuses such as the Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus to have wild animal acts.
And, yes, before you attempt (you will fail) to get into an argument linking to all kinds of anecdotal, exaggerated, irrelevant, out of date, websites documenting mistreatment, I've seen them, thanks.
You pointed out that Jaymi is not an expert on God, but you're obviously no expert on animal circuses, the violations recorded by our USDA, or the web sites and groups that expose their cruelty.
Who would turn a blind eye to the horrors that animals face in these traveling sideshows? Someone who thinks they were placed here by 'God' for us to do whatever we please with them, I suppose.
Photos and videos don't lie. You're fooling yourself if you view the images and video on www.RinglingBeatsAnimals.com and still think they are "quality" and "modern." The whole idea of animal circuses are as antiquated as us thinking African Americans are here for Caucasians or women are here for men. Or in your mind, perhaps they are...
I sincerely hope that you allow yourself to be educated and open your heart and mind both for the animals' AND your children's sake. Humiliation and domination are not things children should be taught is acceptable.
