My Palm History

My Avatar

A little history. Palm's Pilot 1000 and Pilot 5000 organizers were first introduced in March 1996. I can remember first wanting a Palm Pilot in 1997 when the PalmPilot Personal and PalmPilot Professional were introduced. They were a little pricey, always improving, and I wasn't certain I "needed" one...although, I knew I "wanted" one.

In 1998, the Palm III came out. I almost purchased one. In 1999, the Palm V was introduced and I really wanted it. However, the price, my lack of "need" and the constant evolution combined with my patience led me to put off getting one. I got a Franklin RexPro instead...ultimately portable and very functional. This helped to quell my desire for a PalmPilot. Somewhere around this time I also download a PalmPilot emulator which I played with quite a bit, familiarizing myself with the operating system. [It was very pathetic, like a child playing with a picture of the toy he wants.]

2000 saw the introduction of the IIIc (color). Very attractive, but I had my "RoloRex" and could wait for the "next" PalmPilot model. In 2001, Palm introduced the Palm 505 which had an absolutely gorgeous design. In 2002 the Palm 505 got an improved screen and double the memory becoming the Palm 515...I had to have one. But, I held off. There was still more I wanted and I still didn't "need" one.

Then the rumors of OS 5 started coming to light as well as features of the next Palm device. Photos were leaked onto the web. Were they Photoshopped fakes? I monitored Palm bulletin boards and forums almost daily...I was hooked. And then, Palm introduced the Tungsten T. I still didn't need one, it was very costly, there will always be an improved model in the future, there was talk already of OS 6...but much like Simon Birch playing baby Jesus, I just couldn't stand it anymore. I had to have one. It was late November, 2002, and Christmas was fast approaching, but I couldn't risk receiving it as a gift (I'd tried that before). Let the family get me accessories (infinitely more affordable anyway). I found it online $60+ off of retail, no tax, no shipping. A few days later...it arrived...my Tungsten T.
